The textbook
RAMBLE in the JUNGLE: Debating Africa and the World is a reading and comprehension textbook for high school, built from the Ramble writings. Each chapter is an issue: a question thoughtful people answer differently. For each one you read two sides, the author's essay and an editorial counterpoint that argues the other side, and then decide where you stand.
For students and readers: the student edition
The student edition is free for everyone, with no account needed.
- Read it online: the textbook page lists every issue and appendix. Each issue has its own page, which is light on data.
- Download the PDF: near the top of the textbook page, choose A4 (most of the world) or US Letter (USA and Canada). Each is about 1 MB. Print it, or keep it on your phone to read offline.
- The textbook page also explains how to use this book, at the bottom.
For teachers: the teacher edition
The teacher edition adds Appendix B, an answer key with model answers and marking guides for every issue. Because it contains the answers, we share it with teachers only.
- Fill in the teacher-edition request form: your name, email, school or organisation, the subject you teach, your country, and (optionally) a message, such as the class you'd use it with.
- Requests are reviewed personally, usually within a few days. We may email you with questions.
- If you don't have one yet, create a free account. Using the same email as in your request helps us find it.
- Once you're approved, we give your account teacher-edition access and email you. A Teacher edition link then appears at the top of the page when you're logged in.
In the teacher edition you can read the PDF on the page, or open or download it in A4 or US Letter. For security, each download link only works for about a minute. If one stops working, go back to the Teacher edition page and press it again.
Please don't share the teacher edition or the answer key with students, or post it online.
